James Beard Award-winning Chef Chris Shepherd and the Underbelly Hospitality staff became MLB Capital Partners’ food consultants for the Houston Farmers Market Redevelopment project in 2017. Through that relationship, MLB Capital Partners made a deal to acquire a 50% interest in Underbelly Hospitality group. This partnership has allowed Chef Chris Shepherd and his culinary team to focus on the creative and day-to-day operations, while MLB focuses on the financial aspects and portfolio diversification of the business.
Underbelly Hospitality currently operates 4 concepts in Houston, with the first 2 being established in 2012. In 2020, Underbelly Hospitality partnered with Texas-based grocery store chain, H-E-B, to sell chef-inspired ready-made meals starting in 10 store locations across Houston. Since then, the ready-made meals have expanded regionally to supply 50 stores.
Underbelly Hospitality founder and executive chef, Chris Shepherd, has made appearances on shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live and CBS this Morning, and been showcased in notable publications such as The Robb Report as 2019’s “Chef of the Year”, Food & Wine, Time Magazine, and The New York Times, among others.
